Directional drilling is the practice of drilling non-vertical wells. It can be broken down into three main groups: oilfield directional drilling, utility installation directional drilling (horizontal directional drilling), directional boring, and surface in seam (SIS), which horizontally intersects a vertical well target to extract coal bed methane. Determining direction underground is tricky. GPS is unavailable so solutions are limited to compass or gyro-based devices. Gyros can be very expensive and use a considerable amount of power. Compasses are more cost effective and draw less power but may be susceptible to local magnetic anomalies.
True North has considerable experience in manufacturing downhole tools for both tilt sensing and directional applications. Our off-the-shelf Revolution compasses or a customized version to fit a particular footprint would be an excellent solution for your underground navigation challenges.
